Anurag Basu's long awaited action comedy adventure Jagga Jasoos released this past Friday to a mixed response. While the critics unanimously lauded as a brave experiment, they also expressed their reservations with its consistency.
Now, the first day box office collection of the film is out and it stands at a meager Rs 8.57 crore domestically. This is quite a disappointment when compared to the lead actor Ranbir Kapoor's previous hits. His last film, Karan Johar's romantic drama Ae Dil Hai Mushkil from last year, garnered Rs 13.30 crore at the box office on its opening day.
While the past success of Johar as compared to Basu's and the occasion of Diwali should be taken into account, Ae Dil Hai Mushkil also had a formidable rival in Ajay Devgn's action adventure film Shivaay which was just marginally behind the box office collection of Ranbir's film.
Also, Jagga Jasoos fared slightly lower than the 2012 film Barfi!, the previous collaboration of Ranbir and Anurag Basu. That film garnered Rs 8.75 crore on its opening day and went on to cross Rs 100 crore, as reported by Koimoi.com.
Since Ranbir has vowed to indemnify distributors of Jagga Jasoos, they have little to fret over. The concern here is for Ranbir who is once again on a downward spiral after the critical acclaim of Imtiaz Ali's 2015 romantic drama Tamasha and the commercial success of Ae Dil Hai Mushkil.
Additionally, Jagga Jasoos might turn out to be yet another flop in Katrina's recent string, including Nitya Mehra's romantic comedy Baar Baar Dekho and Abhishek Kapoor's romantic drama Fitoor from last year.
Jagga Jasoos also stars Saswata Chatterjee, Sayani Gupta and Evelyn Sharma. It is co-produced by Ranbir's Picture Shuru Productions, Basu's Ishana Movies and is the last production of Walt Disney India.
